A home inventory is an organized record of important and valuable belongings. Where to start
Choose one small room, such as a home office or kitchen. Begin with high-value items: laptops, phones, televisions, cameras, power tools and major appliances. For every item, record its name, category, storage location, approximate value, purchase date and store. Add the serial number and proof of purchase when available.
Which photos are useful
Take one clear photo of the full item and another of the serial number, rating plate or receipt. Use good lighting and avoid blur. Photograph accessories that belong to a set. You do not need to document every low-value object; prioritize items that would be difficult to remember or replace.

Categories help summarize household value, while locations make things easier to find. Use consistent labels such as Electronics, Appliances, Tools and Sports, together with Living room, Garage, Basement or TV cabinet. Fewer naming variations make searching and filtering more reliable.
Keeping the inventory current
Add a new item soon after purchase. Every few months review the most valuable belongings, remove sold or discarded items and confirm that a recent backup exists. A maintained inventory remains useful instead of becoming a one-time document.
